Sister Evie is 109!
Sister Evelyn Hurley, a Sister of Charity of Nazareth, was born March 7, 1915. She entered the order at age 19 and last month celebrated her 109th birthday and 90 years of religious life!
Sister Evie, as she is known, lives in the motherhouse in Nazareth, Kentucky. She was born in Boston, Massachusetts, the oldest of five children of then-prominent Boston City Councilman William Francis Hurley.
She became a teacher in 1934, teaching in Kentucky and Mississippi before returning to Boston in 1950 where she taught for 45 years, retiring in 1995 at age 80.
She taught generations of students, telling The Pilot, the Archdiocese of Boston newspaper, “I totally enjoyed every single student that I taught. There was something special about each one. Each was different, but I loved every one of them.”
After retirement she lived at St. Brigid’s Convent in Boston for nine years before moving to Kentucky ten years ago.
She told The Pilot her daily routine begins about 7:30. After breakfast, she’ll take a morning nap. Mass is celebrated before lunch, followed by an afternoon nap. She then socializes with her fellow sisters or writes letters to friends. After dinner, she usually goes straight to bed.
One difference she noted between Boston and Kentucky? She has never eaten seafood in Kentucky!
